Hiking Across the island of Santorini, Greece

The hike from Oia to Fira is the only hike in Santorini and a must-do when visiting. The 6.5-mile (10.5-kilometer) crimson-dirt path twists and turns through the hilly landscape and quiet villages between the two towns.

The Santorinian landscape reminded me of a coral reef if the ocean suddenly dried up. Bright green, yellow, and Fuschia plants thrive in the mineral-rich volcanic sand. One could see the entire island as the trail climbs to the highest points of the rocky hills. Low clouds drifted across the island, scratching the mountaintops and blanketing villages in an alluring mist.

Despite the cooler temperatures and steady shower of rain, the hike was rejuvinating, magical, and it showed me that Santorini really does have so much offer, despite the season.
